Thrift Stylings - Fashion Over 60

I love a good thrift find! If you're on the hunt for a few modest pieces to add to your Summer wardrobe, don't overlook the thrift store. I was looking for a few light-weight dresses for church. I made out like a bandit at Goodwill! By that, I mean I was able to use my birthday month discount as well as the "color of the week" discount. Truly, a fantastic day of thrifting!

One of the dresses I found, and turns out to be my favorite of the haul, is a Eddie Bauer100% linen maxi-dress. It's the kind of dress that can definitely take you into the fall. Just add a pair of booties! So nice!

I believe in sustainable or pre-loved fashion. It makes sense to re-use items that are in good shape and keep them out of the landfill.

The thrift store is full of surprises. I never know what I'm going to find. That's the beauty of it!

How I Style Thrifted Clothing: Fashion Over 60

I do a considerable amount of thrifting, but I don't always do a try-on segment for my followers. I need to do better. I get a ton of questions about how I plan to style a certain piece or what made my buy a certain dress or sweater.

A friend of mine doesn't hesitate to tell me when she thinks I have picked up an "ugly" dress. I guess she just doesn't have my vision! So, I'm going to be posting a lot more of my thrifted stylings geared toward the active older woman. No skin. No tight-fitting frocks. No boobage. Just modest outfits.

 What I'm Wearing:

  • Ralph Lauren Classic Blue Blazer:  Goodwill
  • Seersucker Pants: Goodwill
  • Wingtip Leather Oxfords: Goodwill
  • Silk Scarf: Goodwill Outlet
  • Handbag: Dooney & Bourke (not thrifted)
  • Sunglasses: Ray Bans (not thrifted)

Car Gadgets - Car Armrest Storage Box - Review

Another long road trip in the car and not enough space to hold an extra coffee container, bottle of water, napkins, phone?

Well, I found a little thing to help me corral all those things and keep them close at hand should they be needed during the long ride. It's a CAR ARMREST STORAGE BOX from Amazon.

It's lightweight and secures to most center console armrests with a simple Velcro strap.  Three detachable cup holders provide space for all your passengers' travel mugs. It's so functional that even your backseat riders can access it. I like that!

I mean, I hate it when I go through a drive-through restaurant and I have no place to put the extra coffee cups or beverages that I just bought.

This storage box is great for dropping in your phone, tissues, hand sanitizer, gum, eyeglasses and other essentials.  It's the gadget you didn't know you needed!  Should you decide to purchase one, please feel free to use my 10% discount code Caron2022

Spring/Summer Favorite Dresses From Amazon

I found the most easy-to-wear, flowy dress on the Amazon website! It's an A-line design with long bell sleeves and slight ruffle at the hem.

It's a modest length. I'm 5'3", so on me, it lands just at my knee. The dress was so nice, that I bought three! Pink floral, green floral and blue floral. They are so comfy!

I don't think the dress is still available, so I've linked a similar Amazon dress here.

Senior Chronicles - Jazzy Lunch on the Green

This senior citizen thing is really taking off! This week I went to the monthly luncheon.  The registration form mentioned an area Italian restaurant, The Original Antonio's, so I thought that we were actually going to the restaurant via the community center bus. As it turned out. We dined al fresco on the field behind the center.

Big open-air tents and even a jazz quartet! A really nice setup! Outdoor dining was a great idea in light of the health concerns that the world is facing.

The food was quite tasty too! Green beans, chicken piccata and cavatelli with broccoli! Delicious!

The servers included a local state representative. I'm not saying she was there just to gain a few brownie points for serving lunch to seniors citizens, but I did see her taking photos of the crowd. Ok, where was I? Oh, yeah. The food was delicious!

I also enjoyed the four-piece funky jazz band. Was it a coincidence that all the band members looked like they were between 65 - 70 years old? Had the luncheon coordinator specifically looked for a band with older musicians? Regardless, they sounded great! They hit a lot of the classics from the big band era. Always a hit with an older crowd.

For dessert, we had a huge slice of double chocolate layered cake. I was going to pass, but it was the day after my birthday and I didn't have a birthday cake this year. This cake was soooo rich! I'm so glad I don't eat like this everyday!

Here's one thing I know: I will definitely take a trip to the restaurant that provided our lunch. It was so worth it.

If you're an active older adult, I highly recommend checking out your community center or even a neighboring town for daytime activities. It's healthy to have some kind of interaction.

And I can't wait to see what's planned for next month's senior luncheon.

Indoor Plants Maintenance Tips - What You've Been Doing Wrong

My local community center recently hosted a plant workshop for active older adults.  Boy, did I learn a lot about what I was doing wrong with my plants. Too much water. Not enough water. Fertilizer. The wrong pots. It's no wonder so many of my plants died!

The workshop was so informative!  The presenter works full-time at Plants a la Carte, a company that provides plants and plant maintenance for corporate clients. If you work in an office environment, you've probably seen someone like her come around to service your plants. I've even gone in the trash can and taken plant clippings after our plant lady had done her thing. That's how I started a Pothos plant years ago.

As I was saying, the presenter seemed very knowledgeable. She brought a variety of plants with her.  Class size was limited to about 12 people, so we each received a lot of personal attention. Registration for the class was only $10. I learned so much!

We were shown plants that were in bad shape. Some needed pruning, re-potting, and some were on their last legs due to overwatering or neglect.

Some of the major takeaways included:

  • Plants need light. Different plants need different amounts of light. Know your plant
  • Plants need water
  • The #1 killer of plants is OVERWATERING.  Water your plant when it needs it. If you water your plant on Wednesdays just because that's your usual housekeeping day, then you're doing it all wrong. Plants should be watered on THEIR schedule, not yours.

  • Don't overdo it on fertilizer. Pay attention to your plant's instructions. Fertilizer should be kept to minimum, like once a year (I definitely have been a little heavy-handed with the MiracleGro)

  • Too much sunlight can be a bad thing.  Plants that get too much direct sunlight are subject to sun burn. They will not recover from this

  • Rotate your plant. If you decide to place a plant in a corner, remember to rotate it from time to time so that it grows straight
  • Bottom-watering. To ensure that the roots are being fed, set the potted plant in a container of water. The plant will slowly soak up the water

The best thing about this workshop was that we were got to take home a beautiful plant along with a few plant clippings. I chose another Pothos plant and clippings from a Ficus. Both are on the low-maintenance squad.  Thank goodness!

What are some of your plant maintenance challenges?

Watch my video here  and see more highlights of the plant workshop. Drop me a line if this was helpful.
